Webcam not working? Quick fixes

  • Open the physical privacy shutter, or press the camera key on your keyboard if it has one.
  • Close any app that might be using the camera, then reload this page.
  • Allow camera access for your browser in your computer's privacy settings.
  • For USB webcams, try a different USB port and avoid unpowered hubs.
  • Restart the browser, and update its version if the camera still does not appear.

Look better on camera

  • Put the main light in front of you, not behind you. A window facing you is ideal.
  • Raise the camera to eye level so you are not looking down at it.
  • Wipe the lens: fingerprints make video look hazy.

Want a full-screen mirror instead? Try the online mirror. Checking your whole setup? Use the video call test or the mic test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my webcam?

Press "Test my camera" and allow camera access when your browser asks. If your camera works, you will see yourself, along with its resolution and frame rate. Pick another camera from the list if you have more than one.

Is the video recorded or uploaded?

No. The video stays on your device and is never sent to our servers. Snapshots are only saved if you press the button, and they download straight to your computer.

Why is my webcam image black?

Check for a physical privacy shutter or a camera on/off key on your laptop. Close other apps that might be using the camera, such as Zoom, Teams or FaceTime. On Windows, check Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, and on a Mac check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.

What resolution and frame rate should my webcam have?

For video calls, 720p (1280 × 720) at 30 frames per second looks good. 1080p is sharper, especially on big screens. Many apps reduce the quality on slow connections, so your camera may look better here than in a call.

Why is the image mirrored?

Most video apps show you a mirror image of yourself because it feels natural, but other people see you the right way round. Use the Mirror switch to see either view.

Why does my frame rate drop in dim light?

Many webcams slow down their frame rate to let in more light. Facing a window or adding a lamp in front of you usually brings it back up and makes the picture less grainy.
