What the spacebar counter measures
This test counts how many separate times you press the spacebar within a time limit. It measures tapping speed and endurance, which matters in some games, rhythm challenges and button-mashing contests. It also works as a quick check that your spacebar registers every press.
How to take the test
- Choose a time limit. Five and ten seconds test pure speed, while 30 and 60 seconds test stamina.
- Press the spacebar once to start the timer, or tap the box on a touch screen.
- Keep pressing as fast as you can until the timer reaches zero.
- Check your total and your presses per second. Press Reset to try again.
Holding the key down only counts once. The test ignores the automatic repeat your keyboard sends while a key is held, so only real presses count.
Tips for a higher score
- Use your thumb and relax. A loose, bouncing motion is faster and less tiring than a tense press.
- Try alternating thumbs. Using both thumbs in turn can double your rhythm on a wide spacebar.
- Find the sweet spot. Pressing near the center of the key gives the most even response, especially on keyboards with stabilizers.
- Warm up first. A couple of short rounds help before you go for a 30- or 60-second record.
Keyboard troubleshooting
If some presses do not count, the problem is often dirt or debris under the key, a worn switch, or a loose stabilizer bar. Try cleaning around the key with compressed air, test with another keyboard, and compare the results. Wireless keyboards with low batteries can also drop presses.
