How to use the mic test
- Press Test my microphone and choose Allow when the browser asks.
- Speak, clap or tap near the mic. The green meter and the waveform should react.
- If you have more than one microphone, pick it from the list.
- Press Record 5 seconds, say a sentence, then play it back to check the sound quality.
Microphone not working? Try these fixes
- Check mute: look for a mute button on your headset cable, keyboard (often F4 or a mic icon) or the mic itself.
- Select the right device: laptops often have a built-in mic plus a headset mic. Pick the one you want in the list above.
- Close other apps: video call apps can lock the microphone. Quit them and reload this page.
- Windows: Settings → System → Sound → Input, choose your mic and watch the test bar. Also check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input, and Privacy & Security → Microphone for your browser.
- Phone: make sure your browser app has microphone permission in the phone's settings.
Getting better sound on calls
- Keep the mic about a hand's width to a forearm's length from your mouth, slightly to the side to avoid breath noise.
- Soft furnishings like curtains and rugs reduce echo in a room.
- A wired headset usually sounds clearer than a laptop's built-in microphone.
Testing everything before a meeting? Use the video call test to check your camera, mic, speakers and internet together. You can also run the webcam test or speaker test separately.

Frequently asked questions
How do I test my microphone online?
Press "Test my microphone" and allow access when your browser asks. Speak normally: the level meter and waveform should move as you talk. Then record a short clip and play it back to hear how you sound.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser. The sound never leaves your device, and the test recording is deleted when you leave or refresh the page.
Why does the meter not move?
Check that the right microphone is selected in the list, that it is not muted (many headsets and laptops have a mute key or switch), and that no other app such as Zoom or Teams has exclusive control of it. Also make sure your browser has microphone permission for this site.
What is a good microphone level?
For normal speech, the meter should mostly sit in the middle and peak around 70–90%. If it constantly hits the top, lower the input volume to avoid distortion. If it barely moves, raise the input level or move closer.
My browser did not ask for permission. What now?
You may have blocked it earlier. Click the lock or settings icon next to the web address and set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page. On a Mac, also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for your browser.
Can I test a USB or Bluetooth microphone?
Yes. Plug it in or pair it, then pick it from the microphone list. Bluetooth headsets often switch to lower-quality "headset" audio while the mic is on, which is normal.
