How to convert military time

Military to standard: for 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hours and add PM (1845 → 6:45 PM). For 0000 to 0059, the hour is 12 AM (0030 → 12:30 AM). From 0100 to 1159, drop the leading zero and add AM (0915 → 9:15 AM). 1200 to 1259 is PM (1230 → 12:30 PM).

Standard to military: for PM times from 1:00 PM onward, add 12 to the hour (4:20 PM → 1620). For 12 AM times, use 00 (12:10 AM → 0010). AM times just need a leading zero (7:05 AM → 0705).

Who uses military time?

Besides the armed forces, the 24-hour clock is standard in hospitals and nursing (for medication and chart times), aviation, police, fire and EMS dispatch, and in most of Europe for everyday times like train timetables. Working with shifts? The time card calculator adds up hours, and the time duration calculator finds the time between two clock times.

Frequently asked questions

What is military time?

Military time is the 24-hour clock written without a colon. The day starts at 0000 (midnight) and ends at 2359 (11:59 PM). It avoids AM/PM mix-ups, which is why the military, hospitals, aviation and emergency services use it.

How do I convert military time to regular time?

If the hours are 13 or more, subtract 12 and add PM: 1530 becomes 3:30 PM. If the hours are 12, it is 12 PM (noon hour). If the hours are 00, it is the 12 AM (midnight) hour: 0045 is 12:45 AM. Anything from 0100 to 1159 is the same as regular AM time.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both are used. 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 the end of a day, so 2400 on Monday is the same moment as 0000 on Tuesday. Most digital clocks show 0000.

How do you say military time out loud?

Read it as two pairs of digits followed by "hours". 0730 is "zero seven thirty hours", 1400 is "fourteen hundred hours" and 2115 is "twenty-one fifteen hours". Leading zeros are spoken as "zero" (sometimes "oh").

Is military time the same as 24-hour time?

Almost. Military time is 24-hour time written without the colon (1430 instead of 14:30). The military also adds a time zone letter, such as 1430Z for UTC ("Zulu" time).
