Understanding exchange rates

An exchange rate tells you how much of one currency you get for one unit of another. If 1 USD = 0.90 EUR, then 100 dollars buys 90 euros, and 1 euro costs about 1.11 dollars (the inverse rate). Rates move every day with interest rates, inflation, trade and market sentiment.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?

The converter uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, provided through the free Frankfurter API. They are published every working day around 16:00 Central European Time and are the mid-market rates banks use as a benchmark.

Why is my bank's rate different?

Banks, card networks, airports and money transfer services add a margin to the mid-market rate, and some also charge a fixed fee. The rate shown here is the benchmark, so it is useful for checking how much extra you are being charged.

Which currencies are supported?

About 30 major currencies covered by the ECB, including the US dollar, euro, British pound, Canadian dollar, Mexican peso, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, Australian dollar, Indian rupee and Chinese yuan.

Are rates updated on weekends?

No. The ECB publishes rates on working days only, so on weekends and holidays the converter shows the most recent rates, with their date.

What is the cheapest way to exchange money when traveling?

Usually paying by a card with no foreign transaction fee, or withdrawing local cash from a bank ATM. If a card machine asks whether to pay in your home currency or the local one, choose the local currency to avoid a poor conversion rate.
