How to convert time zones

  1. Find the UTC offset of the starting zone on that date, for example UTC−4 for New York in summer.
  2. Convert the time to UTC by subtracting the offset: 9:00 AM − (−4 h) = 1:00 PM UTC.
  3. Add the offset of the target zone: 1:00 PM UTC + 1 h = 2:00 PM in London (BST, UTC+1).

Worked example

A call at 9:00 AM in Los Angeles on December 1 (PST, UTC−8) is 5:00 PM UTC. In Paris (CET, UTC+1) that is 6:00 PM, and in Tokyo (JST, UTC+9) it is 2:00 AM the next day.

Frequently asked questions

How does the time zone converter handle daylight saving time?

It uses your browser's built-in time zone database (the same IANA data used by phones and computers), which includes daylight saving rules for each place. Pick a date and the converter applies the rules in effect on that day.

Why does the time difference change during the year?

Countries switch to daylight saving time on different dates, and many places don't use it at all. For example, the U.S. and Europe change clocks on different weekends, so for a few weeks each spring and fall the gap between New York and London is 4 hours instead of 5.

Can I compare more than two time zones?

Yes. Add as many places as you like to the comparison list and each one shows the matching local time and its UTC offset. That is handy for scheduling meetings across offices.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the world's reference time. Time zones are described as offsets from it, such as UTC−5 for New York in winter or UTC+5:30 for India. UTC itself never changes for daylight saving.

Which time zone am I in?

The converter starts with your device's time zone selected as the "from" zone. You can see more detail on the what time zone am I in page.
