How to look up an IP address

  1. Type or paste an IPv4 address (like 8.8.8.8), an IPv6 address, or a website name.
  2. Press Look up. For a website, the tool first finds its IP address using DNS.
  3. Read the location, provider and registry details. Press My IP to look up your own connection.

What the results mean

  • Location: an estimate from an IP geolocation database. Usually right for the country, often right for the region, and less reliable for the city.
  • Provider / organization: the internet provider, hosting company or business that uses the address.
  • ASN: the autonomous system number of the network that routes the address on the internet.
  • Registered network and owner: who the address block is registered to at ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC.

Common reasons to look up an IP

Checking where a suspicious login came from, seeing which company runs a server, confirming a VPN works, troubleshooting a network or reading server logs. To see your own address and run a VPN check, use what is my IP. For a domain's DNS records, try the DNS checker, and for its registration details use the WHOIS lookup.

Frequently asked questions

What does an IP lookup show?

It shows the approximate location of an IP address (country, region and city), the internet provider or organization that uses it, its network (ASN), time zone, and the registered owner of the address block from the regional internet registry.

Can I find someone's exact address from their IP?

No. IP location is approximate and usually points to the provider's area or data center, not a home. Only the internet provider can link an IP to a customer, and they share that only with a legal order.

Can I look up a website instead of an IP?

Yes. Type a domain like example.com and the tool finds its IP address first, then looks it up. Big websites use content delivery networks, so you will often see a nearby data center rather than the company's office.

Why does the location differ from other sites?

Every IP geolocation database is built differently and updated at different times. Results often agree on the country but can differ on the city, especially for mobile networks, VPNs and cloud servers.

What is a private IP address?

Addresses like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16–31.x.x are reserved for home and office networks. They are not unique on the internet, so they have no public location. The tool tells you when you enter one.
