How to play FLAMES by hand

  1. Write both names. Example: TAYLOR and MORGAN.
  2. Cross out letters the names share, one for one: A, O and R appear in both, so cross them out from each name.
  3. Count the letters left: T, Y, L and M, G, N = 6.
  4. Count 6 around F-L-A-M-E-S, cross out the letter you land on, then start counting again from the next letter. Repeat until one letter is left.

Frequently asked questions

What does FLAMES stand for?

FLAMES stands for Friends, Lovers, Affectionate, Marriage, Enemies and Siblings. It's a classic schoolyard game that predicts the relationship between two people from their names.

How do you play FLAMES?

Write both names, cross out the letters they share (one for one), and count the letters left. Then count around the word FLAMES by that number, crossing out the letter you land on, and keep going from the next letter until only one letter remains. That letter is your result.

Do spaces or capital letters matter?

No. Only letters count, and uppercase and lowercase are treated the same. Some people play with full names and some with first names only; try both!

Why did I get Enemies?

It's pure letter counting, so don't worry! Swap in a nickname or a middle name and see if fate changes its mind.

Are the names stored?

No. The game runs entirely in your browser and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
