How to find anagrams

  1. Type a word or a jumble of letters, such as the tiles on your rack.
  2. Press Find anagrams (or Enter).
  3. Full anagrams appear first; every shorter word follows, longest first.

Famous anagrams

  • listen → silent
  • dormitory → dirty room
  • astronomer → moon starer
  • the eyes → they see
  • a gentleman → elegant man

Tips for solving anagrams yourself

  • Look for common endings first: -ing, -ed, -er, -est, -ly.
  • Pair letters that often go together: th, ch, sh, qu, ck.
  • Separate the vowels and consonants, then try alternating them.
  • Write the letters in a circle; seeing them in a new order helps your brain spot words.

Frequently asked questions

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another. "Listen" becomes "silent", "enlist" and "tinsel", using every letter exactly once.

How does the anagram generator work?

It compares your letters with a dictionary of about 76,000 English words. Words that use all your letters are shown as full anagrams, and shorter words you can make from the letters are listed below, grouped by length.

Can it find multi-word anagrams?

This tool finds single words. For phrases, try finding a long word first, then run the leftover letters through the generator again to find the rest.

Which dictionary is used?

The word list comes from SCOWL (Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists) by Kevin Atkinson, including common and moderately uncommon American and international English words. It may not match the official word list of a particular game.

Can I use a blank or wildcard?

Yes. Type a question mark (?) for each unknown letter, for example "ca?" finds cat, car, cab and more.
