Choosing a tattoo lettering style
| Style | Feel | Often used for |
|---|---|---|
| Old English / gothic | Bold, traditional, strong | Family names, chest and forearm pieces |
| Bold gothic | Heavy, dramatic | Short words, knuckles, larger placements |
| Script | Elegant, delicate | Names, quotes, wrist and rib tattoos |
| Bold script | Flowing but clear | Names and dates that need to stay readable |
Tips for lettering that lasts
- Go a little bigger than you think. Ink spreads slightly over time, and tiny letters can blur.
- Mind the spacing. Tight letters merge; your artist will open them up.
- Check every letter of names, dates and translations before the stencil goes on.
- Think about placement. Long phrases suit the forearm, spine or ribs; short words suit fingers or wrists.
