What is a tally counter?

A tally counter (also called a clicker or people counter) is a simple device for counting things one at a time. Ushers use them to count guests, coaches to count laps, scientists to count birds or cells, and shops to count stock. This online version does the same job on your phone or computer, with no batteries.

Ideas for using it

  • Events: count people coming in and going out with two counters, and see the total inside.
  • Fitness: count reps, laps or rounds without losing track.
  • Surveys: traffic counts, bird watching or classroom experiments.
  • Habits: glasses of water, pages read or cigarettes avoided.
  • Games: keep score for each player with a named counter.

Counting tips

Name each counter before you start so the numbers are clear later. If you will be counting fast, use the keyboard or keep your thumb on the big button. Counts stay saved in this browser, but take a screenshot or note the numbers if they matter, because clearing browser data removes them.

Counting keyboard presses instead? Try the spacebar counter or the CPS test. Counting words? Use the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the tally counter?

Press the big + button (or the Space bar, Enter or the up arrow) to add one. Press − (or the down arrow) to take one away. The count is saved in your browser, so it is still there if you reload the page.

Can I count several things at once?

Yes. Add as many counters as you need, give each a name, and count them separately. This is useful for counting cars by color, people in and out, or votes for different options.

Can I count by more than one?

Yes. Set the "Step" for a counter to 2, 5, 10 or any number, and each press adds or removes that amount.

Can the count go below zero?

Not by default, since most counts start at zero. Tick "Allow negative numbers" if you are tracking something like a score difference that can go below zero.

Will it work without internet?

Once the page has loaded, counting works without a connection, and your counts are stored on your device. They are not uploaded anywhere.
