How to count syllables by hand
- Say the word slowly and clap or tap for each sound beat.
- Put your hand under your chin: each time your jaw drops, that is a syllable.
- Count the vowel sounds, not the vowel letters. "Boat" has two vowels but one sound.
- A silent final "e" usually does not add a syllable ("make" is one).
Why syllables matter
Syllable counts shape rhythm. They help poets fit a form, songwriters match lines to a melody, and teachers check reading levels: readability formulas like Flesch–Kincaid use average syllables per word to estimate how hard a text is.

Frequently asked questions
How does the syllable counter work?
It uses a well-tested English syllable algorithm that combines pronunciation rules with a list of exceptions. It counts each word, then adds up totals for every line, which makes it handy for poems and lyrics.
How accurate is it?
Very accurate for everyday words, but English spelling is irregular and some words are pronounced differently by different speakers (like "fire" or "every"). Treat edge cases as a guide and trust your ear.
How do I check a haiku?
Write each line of the haiku on its own line. A traditional English haiku has 5, 7 and 5 syllables. The line counts appear next to each line so you can adjust words until it fits.
What is a syllable?
A syllable is a unit of sound built around a vowel sound. "Cat" has one, "pa-per" has two and "com-pu-ter" has three. Clapping as you say a word is a quick way to count by hand.
Can it count syllables for a sonnet or song?
Yes. A Shakespearean sonnet usually has 10 syllables per line (iambic pentameter). For songs, matching syllable counts between verses helps lines fit the same melody.
