Where random teams help

  • Classrooms: group projects and lab partners without picking favorites.
  • Sports and PE: fair pickup game teams in seconds.
  • Workshops and meetings: breakout rooms that mix people who don't usually work together.
  • Game nights: trivia teams, charades sides or tournament seeding.

Why random grouping is fair

The generator uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle powered by your browser's cryptographic random numbers, so every possible arrangement is equally likely. Dealing the shuffled names in turn keeps team sizes as even as possible.

Frequently asked questions

How does the team generator split people?

It shuffles your list with a cryptographically secure random shuffle, then deals names into teams one at a time, like dealing cards. Teams end up as even as possible, with at most one person difference in size.

Can I choose team size instead of the number of teams?

Yes. Switch to "People per team" and enter the size you want. The generator works out how many teams are needed.

What if the names do not divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person. For example, 10 people in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.

Can I name the teams?

Teams are numbered automatically. You can copy the result and rename the teams wherever you paste it.

Is my list saved?

No. The names stay in your browser only while the page is open.
