How steps convert to miles

Stride (in) ≈ height (in) × 0.415 (men) or × 0.413 (women)
Miles = steps × stride (in) ÷ 63,360
Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ stride (in)

There are 63,360 inches in a mile, so dividing by your stride in inches gives the steps it takes you to walk one mile.

Worked example

A 5 ft 9 in (69 in) woman has an estimated stride of 69 × 0.413 ≈ 28.5 inches. Her 10,000 steps cover 10,000 × 28.5 ÷ 63,360 ≈ 4.5 miles, and she takes about 2,223 steps per mile.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

For most adults it is roughly 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps per mile. Taller people with longer strides take fewer steps; running strides are longer still, so you take fewer steps per mile when you run.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

With an average walking stride of about 2.3 to 2.6 feet, 10,000 steps is about 4.4 to 5 miles (7 to 8 km). Enter your height or your own stride to get a personal number.

How is stride length estimated from height?

A common rule of thumb is stride length ≈ height × 0.415 for men and × 0.413 for women. It is an average, so measuring your own stride gives a better result.

How do I measure my stride length?

Walk a known distance, such as 100 feet or a 400 m track lap, counting your steps at a normal pace. Divide the distance by the number of steps. Repeat a couple of times and average.

Why does my fitness tracker show a different distance?

Trackers estimate stride from your height and sometimes adjust with GPS or your pace. Small differences in stride add up over thousands of steps, so results can differ by 10% or more.
