Basic chords
A major chord is built from a root note, the note four half steps up, and the note seven half steps up. Try pressing these three keys together:
| Chord | Notes |
| C major | C · E · G |
| F major | F · A · C |
| G major | G · B · D |
| A minor | A · C · E |
These four chords (C, G, A minor, F) are enough to play along with a huge number of pop songs.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play the online piano with my keyboard?
The middle row of your computer keyboard plays the white keys: A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K, L and ;. The row above plays the black keys: W, E, T, Y, U, O and P. Press Z and X to move down or up an octave.
Can I play it on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap the keys with your fingers. You can press several keys at once to play chords. Turn your phone sideways for bigger keys, and scroll the keyboard to reach more notes.
What is middle C?
Middle C (C4) is the C nearest the middle of a full piano keyboard. On this piano it is labeled C4. Each C going up is an octave higher (C5, C6), and each one going down is lower (C3, C2).
What does the sustain switch do?
Like a sustain pedal, it lets notes keep ringing after you let go of the key, so you can blend notes together. Turn it off for short, separate notes.
Is there any delay when I play?
The sound is made in your browser, so it starts almost instantly on most devices. Bluetooth headphones add a noticeable delay; wired headphones or speakers feel more responsive.
