Worked example

A man who is 5 ft 10 in is 10 inches over 5 feet. The Devine formula gives 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg (161 lb). His healthy BMI range at that height is about 129 to 174 lb, a much wider band.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ideal weight?

There is no single perfect weight for anyone. "Ideal body weight" formulas were created mainly to estimate drug doses, and they give a rough reference weight for a height. A healthy weight range based on BMI (18.5 to 24.9) is a broader and more useful guide for most adults.

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Each was fitted to different data at different times. Devine (1974) is the most widely used, Robinson and Miller (1983) are revisions, and Hamwi (1964) is an older rule of thumb. They usually agree within a few kilograms for average heights.

Do these formulas work for short people?

They are based on height above 5 feet, so they become less reliable for adults under about 5 ft (152 cm). The BMI-based range still works at any adult height.

Do they consider muscle or frame size?

No. They only use height and sex. Someone with a large frame or a lot of muscle can be healthy above these numbers. That is why the healthy BMI range is shown alongside.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is general information for adults. A doctor can help you understand what a healthy weight looks like for you.
