Cubic feet formula
Cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × height (ft)
From inches: L × W × H ÷ 1,728
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27 · Gallons = cubic feet × 7.48
Worked example
A moving box that is 18 × 18 × 16 inches holds 18 × 18 × 16 = 5,184 cubic inches. Dividing by 1,728 gives 3 cubic feet. Ten of those boxes take up 30 cubic feet.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate cubic feet?
Multiply length × width × height, with all three measured in feet. If you measure in inches, multiply the three numbers and divide by 1,728 (because 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches in a cubic foot).
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft). Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards, which is how soil, mulch and concrete are often sold.
How many gallons are in a cubic foot?
One cubic foot holds about 7.48 US gallons, or 28.3 liters. That is useful for fish tanks, ponds and water tanks.
Can I add several boxes or items?
Yes. Add a row for each item, set the quantity, and the calculator totals them. That works well for moving boxes, storage units and shipping.
How big a moving truck or storage unit do I need?
A rough guide is 150 to 200 cubic feet of belongings per furnished room. A 10 × 10 storage unit with 8 ft walls holds about 800 cubic feet, though you can never pack it perfectly full.
