How the calculation works
Coins = invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ buy price
Value = coins × sell price × (1 − sell fee)
Profit = value − invested
Example: investing $1,000 in Bitcoin at $60,000 with a 0.5% fee buys 0.01658 BTC. Selling at $75,000 with a 0.5% fee returns about $1,237.53, a profit of $237.53 (23.8%). Without fees, the profit would be $250.
Tips
- Check the "spread" too: some apps add a markup to the price in addition to the listed fee.
- Keep a record of every buy and sell for taxes, including coin-to-coin trades.
- Crypto prices are very volatile. Only invest what you can afford to lose.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate crypto profit?
Work out how many coins you bought (amount invested minus fees, divided by the buy price), multiply by the sell price, subtract the selling fee, and compare with what you invested. This calculator does that and shows your ROI and break-even price.
Does it use live prices?
No. Prices change every second and differ between exchanges, so you enter the buy and sell prices yourself, for example from your exchange or a price site. That also lets you test "what if" prices.
Why include exchange fees?
Fees on both the buy and the sell reduce your profit, and on small trades they matter a lot. Common trading fees range from about 0.1% on low-cost exchanges to 1.5% or more on simple "buy" buttons and card purchases.
Is crypto profit taxable in the US?
Yes. The IRS treats cryptocurrency as property. Selling, trading one coin for another or spending crypto can trigger capital gains tax. Holding more than a year usually means lower long-term rates. Brokers now report crypto sales on Form 1099-DA.
What does break-even price mean here?
It is the sell price at which you get back exactly what you invested after paying both fees. You need the coin to rise above it to make money.
